Repairing Leaky Faucet

A leaky faucet can cost you up to $20.00 a month on your water bill.  Multiply that by the number of leaky faucets you have.  It’s easy to ignore this problem but it certainly adds up.  Follow the instructions here and save money on a service call to a plumber. Repairing a leaky faucet can be done by homeowners.

First, shut off the water supply to the leaky faucet, this is a valve typically found underneath the sink. In some cases if there is not valve here you will need to shut off the water supply coming into the home.  Now loosen the screw in the center of the faucet handle.  There could be some ornamental cap covering this screw.

Now gentle remove the handle from the stem.  You should see a nut below this that is holding the stem in place.  Turn this nut counterclockwise until it is removed, and lift the stem out.  The typical cause for a leaky faucet is a bad or worn out washer. Remove this washer and replace it with an exact copy, which you can find at your hardware store.  Bring the old one with you.  If any part of the stem or handle appears damaged, take them to the hardware or home improvement store and get their opinion.

Now you can reassemble the faucet by installing the parts in the reverse order that you removed them. Make sure the nut holding the stem in place is tightened properly, and also make sure the handle is in the right position when you put it back.  Plumbers recommend lubricating the threads on the stem with Vaseline or similar.

Turn the water pressure back and check the faucet for leaks.  If the leak continues, we suggest you call in your licensed plumber to troubleshoot and fix the issue.
